Guess the Title: a Daily TV Puzzle Made from What You've Watched
·
There are good daily guessing games for films and TV. Most of them pick from a big catalogue, so on half the days the answer is something you have never seen, and on the other half you learn a plot twist from the clues.
Guess the title, the daily puzzle in OpenTV, works the other way round. It picks one title a day from your own library: a show or a film you have already watched. You cannot be spoiled by something you have finished, and when you get it, the reward is a memory rather than a fact.
Here is how it works.
Where to find it
Open the Explore tab. On Feed, there is a Guess the title card: "One title a day, from your library. Six tries."
The first time you open it, a short screen explains the rules and offers two switches: Remind me each day, and Show my puzzle streak on my profile. Then tap Start playing.
How a round works
You get a still from the show or film, heavily blurred, and six tries.
Type into the box that asks Which show or film is this? As you type, it suggests titles from your library, so spelling is not part of the game. Pick one to guess.
Every miss sharpens the picture a little and unlocks a clue, in this order:
- Whether it is a series or a film, and the year: "First aired in 2013", or "Released in 2006"
- The genre
- For a show, the network and the number of seasons. For a film, the director and the running time
- A lead actor
- Last, a famous character. For a show, it is the character you voted your favourite most often
If nothing comes to mind, Skip this try uses up a try and still unlocks the next clue.
There is one near miss with its own message. If you guess the right film series but the wrong instalment, you see Right series, wrong part! It still counts as a miss, but it shows up as a yellow square instead of a red one.
When the round ends
Solved or not, the picture comes fully into focus and the title is revealed.
If it came from your library, you also get the memory: when you watched it, and how many episodes. Open the show takes you straight to its page, which is often the start of a rewatch.
On days when the puzzle is a classic you have not seen, Add to watchlist puts it on your list in one tap.
Below that are your numbers: Played, Win % and Avg. tries, and your puzzle streak, counted in days. A new title arrives tomorrow.
Where the titles come from
The puzzle only picks titles you have watched enough of to be fair. For a show, that is four episodes or half of what has aired, with the rule relaxed a little for a small library. Any film you marked watched counts too.
If your library is still small, with fewer than ten fair titles, a set of well-known classic shows is added to the pool so there is still a puzzle every day. Those days are labelled A classic, and the others From your library.
Today's title is picked once and then fixed for the day, at midnight on your phone's own clock. Adding shows at lunchtime does not change the answer.
The puzzle number is personal. Your #1 is the first day you played, so "#12" means your twelfth day, not a number shared with everyone.
Sharing without spoiling
After a round, tap Share and choose Share as image or Share as text. The text looks like this: OpenTV #12 · 3/6 🟥🟨🟩
Green is right, yellow is the right series but the wrong part, red is a miss, and black is a skipped try. It never names the title. Your friends see how you did, not what it was, so you can post it anywhere.
Reminders and settings
The settings live in Settings, on the App tab, under Daily puzzle.
- Daily reminder sends one notification a day, at the time you set in Remind at, and only if you have not played yet.
- Puzzle on your public profile shows days, colours and stats on your profile, never which title.
- Daily puzzle itself can be turned off. That hides the game everywhere and keeps your history, so turning it back on carries on where you left off.
Privacy
The puzzle runs on your phone, from your own library. Your answers stay there. The only thing that can leave the phone is what you choose to put on your public profile, and that is days, colours and stats, never a title.
The picture is downloaded the first time a title comes up, so the very first look needs a connection. The clues come from what is already on your phone, so they still work offline.
Is it free?
Yes. Today's puzzle, its reminder and its streak are free, with no ads, and none of it needs an account.
If you are new to OpenTV, the puzzle gets better the more history you have. Importing it first means even day one picks from years of watching: see how to get your TV Time history back or how to move from Trakt, Letterboxd, Simkl or IMDb.
