A TV and Film Tracker Built for iPhone Duo
·
iPhone Duo is Apple's first foldable iPhone, and it changes where an app's buttons live. Closed, it is a tall phone with a strip down the right edge. Open, it is close to a small tablet with a fold down the middle. An app that was drawn for a normal iPhone can end up with buttons under the strip, or a price and a button sitting right on the fold.
OpenTV has supported iPhone Duo since version 2.0.1. This article explains what changes when you close it, open it, or turn it on its side. It applies to iPhone only: there is no Android foldable version of these changes.
Closed: everything in the side strip
When iPhone Duo is closed, iOS moves an app's bars into a strip down the right-hand side of the screen, next to the clock. Back and close go at the top, the app's actions under them, and the tab bar at the bottom.
That only works for bars the system itself draws. Buttons an app paints on its own stay where they were, often under the strip. So OpenTV moved to the system's own bars on every screen. On a closed Duo:
- The four tabs, Shows, Movies, Explore and Profile, sit in the strip.
- Back, close and the ⋯ menu on each page go to the top of the strip.
- The bell on your Profile goes there too.
- So does the close button on the page where you write a comment.
No screen draws anything under the strip. Posters and lists stay inside the part of the screen you can read and tap. List screens keep the same strip buttons while you edit them, so nothing jumps around under your thumb.
When you scroll your Profile on the closed phone, the bar that stays at the top keeps your name in the middle of the space you can see.
Open and upright: room for more
Open iPhone Duo and hold it upright, and the bars go back to normal: along the top, with the tab bar at the bottom. What changes is the space.
- Your Profile fills the wider screen. It used to stop at a narrow column. Now it spreads out, and your profile picture grows to match.
- Comments can sit beside the page. If you have joined the OpenTV community, a show, episode or film page and its comments share the open screen, half each. You read the episode on one side and the thread on the other. In Arabic, the comments are on the left.
- Show, film and episode pages use the full width. They do not split into a list on one side and a page on the other. That was tried on the Duo and dropped, because full pages read better.
Fold the phone shut, and the page goes back to full width with its comments behind the Comments row, where they are on any iPhone.
Folding does not lose your place
A foldable is folded and unfolded all day, often in the middle of something. Two things in OpenTV are built for that.
A comment you were halfway through writing beside a show survives folding the phone. Close it, open it again, and the words are still there.
And the page you were on stays the page you were on. Opening the phone does not reload it, so you do not lose the episode you had swiped to.
Open on its side: nothing on the fold
Turn the open phone on its side and iOS brings the side strip back, now on the right of the wide screen. OpenTV's tabs and buttons go back into it.
The fold is in the middle of that wide screen. A button on the fold is hard to press and a price on the fold is hard to read. Two screens in OpenTV are mostly a column of text and one important button, so they get special care:
- The welcome screen, the first thing you see in a new install
- The OpenTV Plus screen, which shows the plans and the button to subscribe
On the open Duo held on its side, both use one half of the screen. Nothing you need to press sits on the fold.
What stays the same
Everything else works as it does on any iPhone. Your library is still on the phone, in the app's own database. You mark episodes, rate them, pick how they felt, and it all stays on the device unless you choose a backup or sync.
One setting does not apply. Classic tab bar, under Settings, on the App tab, swaps the floating tab bar for the flat one from before iOS 26. It is not offered on iPhone Duo, because the Duo's tab bar moves into the strip when closed.
Getting started on iPhone Duo
If you are moving to iPhone Duo from another iPhone, you can bring your library with you:
- On the old iPhone, make sure your iCloud backup is on, under Settings, the Library tab, then Backup.
- Install OpenTV on iPhone Duo.
- Restore from your iCloud copy on the welcome screen.
Coming from another phone or another app? Moving from another phone? in Settings, on the Library tab, shows the options. You can also keep an iPhone Duo and an Android phone in step for free through your own Google Drive: see how to sync your TV tracker between iPhone and Android.
