Use OpenTV in ChatGPT and Claude: Ask About Your Watch History
·
You can now talk to your OpenTV library. Connect it to ChatGPT or Claude and ask things like "did I watch Severance?", "how far am I in The Bear?" or "what did I watch most this year?", and the answer comes from your own history, not a guess.
It can also keep your library up to date. Tell it "I watched the next episode of Stranger Things last night" and it marks it, after you approve the change. It works on the free plans of both ChatGPT and Claude, and you add it once: it then works on your phone and your computer.
What you need
- The OpenTV app on iPhone or Android, with an account (Profile → Join).
- OpenTV Plus.
- OpenTV Backup turned on: in OpenTV, Profile → ••• → Settings → Library → Backup → OpenTV Backup. The assistant reads this copy of your library, and Sync, which comes on with it, carries changes back to your phone.
The connector address is the same for both:
https://theopentv.com/mcpAdd it to ChatGPT
- Open chatgpt.com in a browser. Adding a custom server is done on the website; afterwards it also works in the ChatGPT app on your phone.
- Open Plugins, then Add, then Add custom MCP server.
- Fill in:
- Name: OpenTV
- Description: Your TV and film history: ask about it and keep it up to date.
- Icon (optional): the OpenTV icon
- Connection: Server URL,
https://theopentv.com/mcp - Authentication: OAuth
- Tick I understand and want to continue and add it.
- A sign-in page from theopentv.com opens. Keep it open and go to the next section.
Add it to Claude
- In the Claude app or at claude.ai, open Settings → Connectors.
- Choose Add custom connector.
- Name: OpenTV. Remote MCP server URL:
https://theopentv.com/mcp. Leave the sign-in settings as Claude detects them and tap Add. - Tap Connect next to OpenTV. A sign-in page from theopentv.com opens.
The free Claude plan allows one custom connector.
Sign in with a code from the app
On the sign-in page:
- In OpenTV, open Profile → ••• → Settings → Library → Claude & ChatGPT, read what the connection can do, and tap Get a code.
- Type the six digits on the page and tap Allow.
Each code works once and lasts five minutes. To connect again later, get a new one. If you made your OpenTV account with an email and password, the page also lets you sign in with those instead.
What you can ask
- What was the last show I watched?
- How far am I in Breaking Bad?
- How did I feel about the season finale of Severance?
- Which films did I rate five stars?
- What did I watch in March?
- What's on my watchlist?
And what it can do for you:
- Mark an episode or a film watched, on the day you actually saw it.
- Rate an episode or a film, half stars included.
- Add a film to your watchlist.
- Set how an episode made you feel.
- Un-mark an episode, which also removes its rating, feelings and favourite character. Your comments stay.
ChatGPT and Claude ask you before every change. The change reaches your phone the next time you open OpenTV. A show has to be in your library before episodes of it can be marked, so add new shows in the app first.
What it can see, and what it cannot
The assistant reads your OpenTV Backup only when you ask about it: what you watched and when, your ratings, feelings, favourite characters, lists and comments. Your private notes are never included. Our server reads the backup to answer and stores nothing from it; we only count how often each tool is used, never what you asked.
What you ask, and the answer, go to OpenAI or Anthropic under their own terms. You can remove the connection at any time in OpenTV (Settings → Library → Claude & ChatGPT), and it stops working at once.
More details are on the OpenTV connector page and in the privacy policy.
