Stremio Watch History: Track What You Watch Automatically

If you watch shows in Stremio, you have probably noticed the gap. Stremio knows what you watched, but it is not a tracker. It will not show you a Watch List of what is next across all your shows, your stats, or a history going back years. And ticking every episode off by hand in a separate app is the kind of chore that lasts about a week.

OpenTV can read your Stremio watch history and tick those episodes off for you. This article explains how to set it up, exactly what it does, and the limits worth knowing.

What it does

When you connect your Stremio account, OpenTV reads which episodes you have marked watched in Stremio. For any show you already track in OpenTV, it marks those episodes watched in your library.

After that, it checks again each time OpenTV starts. Watch an episode in Stremio in the evening, start OpenTV the next morning, and it is ticked off.

That is all it does. It is deliberately narrow.

What it does not do

About the dates

There is one honest limitation. Stremio does not keep the date you watched each episode. So when OpenTV brings an episode in from Stremio, it is added with the day OpenTV saw it.

For episodes you watch from now on, that is usually right, or a day out. For a big back catalogue you watched in Stremio months ago, those episodes will all arrive with the same date. If dates matter to you, a TV Time, Trakt or Simkl export may carry better ones. See how to move your history from Trakt, Letterboxd, Simkl or IMDb.

How to set it up

  1. Open OpenTV and go to Settings.
  2. Open the Library tab.
  3. Under Your data, tap Stremio.
  4. Enter your Stremio email and Password.
  5. Tap Connect Stremio.

Your password goes to Stremio once, to sign in, and is not kept. OpenTV stores only the sign-in session Stremio gives back, in your phone's secure storage.

If you sign in to Stremio with Facebook, you will need to set a password in Stremio first. OpenTV signs in with email and password.

Once connected, the screen shows the account, when it last checked, and a Check now button if you do not want to wait for the next launch. When it adds episodes, it tells you how many. Disconnect stops the checks; nothing already added is removed.

Do you need an OpenTV account?

No. Connecting Stremio is not the same as joining the OpenTV community. Your library stays on your phone, and the Stremio connection is between your phone and Stremio.

If you do join the community later, nothing changes about how the Stremio connection works.

Plex and Jellyfin work the same way

The same section has two siblings, built on the same rules:

Both only read, both only touch shows you already track, and both check each time the app starts. Your phone stays the source of truth.

Other ways people track Stremio

Stremio has its own Trakt integration, and Simkl lists community add-ons for Stremio that log what you watch to a Simkl account. Those send your history to an online service, which suits people who want it there.

OpenTV takes the other route. It reads from Stremio and keeps the result on your phone, so you get a TV Time style tracker without another account to manage. Which is better depends on where you want your history to live. We wrote about that in what happens to your watch history when a tracker shuts down.

A good setup

A setup that works well for many people:

  1. Import your old history once, from a TV Time export or another tracker. See how to get your TV Time history back.
  2. Make sure the shows you watch in Stremio are in your OpenTV library.
  3. Connect Stremio.
  4. Turn on backup: your own iCloud Drive on iPhone, or your own Google Drive on Android, under Settings, Library, Backup.

From then on, Stremio does the watching and OpenTV does the remembering.
